Sports Direct in court over Employment law
Workers, who were employed by his ailing clothing chain USC presented their case at Glasgow’s employment tribunal stating that they had only been informed that the company’s warehouse in Dundonald, Ayrshire, would close 15 minutes before it was shut down. Under current employment law employees have to be given 30 days consultation before losing their jobs.
Mike Ashley who was also a shareholder in the RANGERS football club has received significant press cover for the company’s “disgraceful” behaviour with more than 50 former employees. Under current European legislation the Insolvency Service will have to pick up the bill for the 50 workers, but it is only obliged to pay eight weeks’ worth of the compensation to which they are entitled. There are a number of other employment irregularities that are receiving legal actions, some that are considered so controversial are also under parliamentary debate.
