Uber “taxi App” wins its court case
The tens of thousand licensed taxi drivers in London represented by LTDA – The Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association presented their case that the smartphone acts in exactly the same way as their taximeter. It calculates the fare by means of time taken and distance covered – and it’s doing exactly the same job as a Black Cab meter. Private hire legislation specifically prohibits private hire vehicles from using a meter.
Their case that the smartphone app acts in exactly the same way as a taximeter was over ruled by Mr Justice Ouseley who declared that as taximeters do not depend on a GPS signal the private hire vehicles do not operate in the same way !
Transport for London state with “significant public interest in establishing legal certainty in the matter” they are glad the matter has come to a conclusion. It is very likely that the LTDA will appeal.
